No Jobs for Immigrants
The Government is mulling over the possibility of imposing a minimum compound on foreigners who overstay, rather then jailing them, in a move to encourage them to leave the country.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said that with more than one million illegal immigrants believed to be in Malaysia, authorities would have to find ways – apart from enforcement – to get them to leave.
“There are many overstayers in the country, With the global economy slowing down, we will want to ensure that jobs in Malaysia are for Malaysians.
“The ministry’s acting secretary-general Datuk Raja Azhar Raja Abdul Manaf has already began a trial run at the KL International Airport. If this proves to be successful in getting illegals to return home, we will do it on a large scale.
“We will ensure the compound is minimal as the target is to get them to leave,” he told a press conference on Friday.
