Analyst wants Putrajaya to peg ringgit

Analyst wants Putrajaya to peg ringgit

Malaysia’s ringgit is sliding toward its fixed exchange rate of a decade ago and central bank assurances the weakness will prove temporary aren’t convincing everyone.

Putrajaya has been urged to revert to the system of pegging the ringgit to counter its current depreciation and enable it to stabilise.

Md Shukri Shuib, who is a senior lecturer in political and international studies at Universiti Utara Malaysia, said it was crucial to peg the ringgit because its sliding value could push up import costs, thus impacting the prices of essential goods.

"The fluctuating Ringgit will not only have a bearing on international trade but if left uncontrolled, it can lead to higher cost of living, and could become one of the factors behind the disruption of the three universal functions of politics, economy and social.

"There's little point in the nation garnering an income of RM104 billion from the tourism industry when millions of Malaysians are experiencing the negative effects of the ringgit's depreciation,"

No Jobs for Immigrants

The Government is mulling over the possibility of imposing a minimum compound on foreigners who overstay, rather then jailing them, in a move to encourage them to leave the country.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said that with more than one million illegal immigrants believed to be in Malaysia, authorities would have to find ways – apart from enforcement – to get them to leave.

“There are many overstayers in the country, With the global economy slowing down, we will want to ensure that jobs in Malaysia are for Malaysians.

“The ministry’s acting secretary-general Datuk Raja Azhar Raja Abdul Manaf has already began a trial run at the KL International Airport. If this proves to be successful in getting illegals to return home, we will do it on a large scale.

“We will ensure the compound is minimal as the target is to get them to leave,” he told a press conference on Friday.

New Forest Park at Putrajaya

THE canopy of tall trees isolated us from the hustle and bustle of the outside world, providing us with refreshingly coolness and a sensation of charming relaxation.

There we were, a group of journalists, basking in the chirping of birds, the rustling of leaves and the occasional buzzing of winged insects, enjoying the raw nature under the clear, translucent sky. It was simply beautiful and delightful!

We were standing in a tropical forest 90m above sea level at Putrajaya for a preview of the forest-cum-park in Precincts 14 and 15, ahead of its official launch this coming Friday.

The park’s development comprises four phases, with the first beginning in 2001.

More than 94,000 trees have been planted so far and Putrajaya Corporation (PjC) will continue to identify new species especially the ones going extinct or are rare.

Taman Rimba Alam will also serve as a gene pool for research and preservation due to PjC’s close working ties with the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRiM) and the Forestry Department.

According to Rosslan, of the 163 meranti species found in peninsular Malaysia, 80 are available at the park.

The components of the park are:

·Avenue trees (planted near the entrance);

·Instant Forest Display (for large trees like palm);

·International Tropical Arboretum (forest trees originating from Southeast Asia);

·Red Meranti-Keruing Forest (dominant species in Malaysian forests);

·Ridgetop Hillside Forest (trees in hilly areas);

·Chengal-Kempas Forest (both important species are currently dwindling in numbers);

·Indigenous Forest Fruit Trees (to balance the eco-system);

·Planting Around Water Bodies (for high moisture species);

·Kasai Merawan Stand (represented by wide leaf trees); and

·Mixed Species Matrix (for fast-growing species).

After the tour on foot, we travelled on four wheel-drives through bumpy routes. We spotted horse trails used by the mounted police units for training.

Activities such as camping, fishing, trekking and horse-riding will be made available to the public from early next year.

Research, tree identification and related activities will also be opened to higher education institution students and government agencies.

The final phase of Taman Rimba Alam will be carried out under the 10th Malaysia Plan. Included in the final phase are the construction of a forest management and education centre, maintenance building, campsites, chalets, washrooms and park areas.

Malaysian International Fireworks Competition In Putrajaya, Malaysia

Malaysian International Fireworks Competition (MIFC) will kick off in Putrajaya, the administrative center of Malaysia on Tuesday night, local media reported on Tuesday.

The night sky above the administrative capital will be set ablaze in bright colors dancing in rhythm to pulsating music, the New Straits Times said.

One of the national team members, Soo Kok Lian, 27, said it took them approximately three months to choreograph the pyro- musical synchronization to their satisfaction.

This year's competition would be hosted on a much grander scale compared to last year, said Official MIFC producer Global 2000 Sdn Bhd chief executive officer, Joe Ghazzal.

"Last year, we lined shells containing fireworks across a span of 100m, but this year, we would be lining the shells across a span of 250m.

"The sound system will be further enhanced enabling those standing even a kilometer away from the PICC to hear the music clearly," he said.

Ghazzal, who is also the chief judge of the 2008 MIFC, said the four participating countries would be judged based on five different aspects, including the choice and variety of colors, the originality of the display units and the correlation between fireworks and music.

Following Malaysia's display on Tuesday night, China will put on its show on Saturday, while Canada and Spain will light up the skies on August 20 and 24 respectively.

Last year's winner, Australia, will end the competition on August 29.

The Malaysian team kicked off the Malaysian International Fireworks Competition (MIFC) with a bang at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC).
Thousands of people watching the show were left awed, as the colourful pyrotechnics burst in the sky to the catchy tune of Wizard in the Winter, Amigos Para Sempre and Malaysia Truly Asia for 25 minutes.

The show began at 9.30pm with some 3,000 fireworks that shot up as high as 80 metres, all ignited from the Seri Gemilang Bridge opposite the PICC, at a safe distance from the spectators.

Following Malaysia's performance, themed "Night of a Thousand Stars", China will put on a show on Saturday, while Canada and Spain on Aug 20 and 24 respectively.

Several packages such as Night Tour, Putrajaya Cruise Package and Kuala Lumpur Hop On Hop Off tour services from KL to Putrajaya will be made available on all five days.
About 10,000 parking lots will be allocated to the public near the PICC as roads leading to the convention centre will be closed from 6pm onwards.

Free shuttle services from the Putrajaya ERL station as well as from Putrajaya Boulevard will also be made available.
